Cricket World Cup 2011!!!

Well done Team INDIA and Vande Madaram!!!

It was a momentous day for all of us, I would have thought. India
winning the Cricket world cup on April 2nd 2011, was the tryst with destiny, especially for the young generation Indians.

I could easily tell that, the finals at Lord’s 28 years ago, on the 25th of June, 1983,   when the then tournament minnows beat the mighty West Indies, was the “FINAL” that would be always etched on the mind of ours, the then young generation!!

I was 14 then and was in year 10 at school and what a time we had!!  The match was seen, so many times after that by most of us, and not to forget the highlights, which were shown often in our then Doordharshan, for nearly a year.

That matched completely changed the young Indian generation’s psyche, opening up the horizon and the new world, made us youngsters feel stronger, at least mentally, whilst in the process slowly getting rid of the colonial made inferiority complex.

I could vividly recollect, each and every ball, that was bowled that day; the catches taken and missed, the runs scored and the wickets that fell, the fag, Krish Sreekanth was seen puffing, the blazing opening runs he scored, the fantastic running catch by Kapil off Viv Richards blazing bat, the perfect Yorker, Kapil bowled to get rid of Greenidge………eventually the champagne that flowed.

Most of the scenes were recreated on Saturday’s final against the mighty Sri Lankans, which I am sure the current young generations would eagerly etch in their silicon minds for their life time!

Indians, whose predictability is to be unpredictable on the field, in my opinion, peaked at the right time in the competition and hence, clinically, and systemically, in the process polished off, Australia, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, before holding up the much coveted cup after 24 years!!!

The future is INDIA and the future is in INDIA

Well done Team INDIA and Vande Madaram!!!
